Marginalia
Marginalia is a book-reading app for mobile that uses Generative AI to create a newly interactive and creative reading experience. It is an exploratory new tool and social media to engage with the world’s collection of printed books, propelling human knowledge.
Planning
The beta version of the app was already built and I was responsible to redesign the whole experience. The UX design process for the app followed a user-centered approach, starting with thorough user research and brainstorming to define user needs and ideate potential solutions. The next phase involved transforming ideas into concrete designs, which were then tested with real users to ensure usability and effectiveness. The final app is going to be launched to the audience, but the process doesn't end there. Continuous iteration based on user feedback is essential to keep improving the app's user experience and meeting the evolving needs of the users.
User Research Phase
Understanding the people who will use our product.
Their backgrounds, demographics, motivations, pain points, emotions, and goals.
Target Audience
Interviews
To empathize with and understand the target audience’s needs, pain points, and motivations, and get to know them, I did interviews with some of our probable users. I prepared questions to ask but the flow of the conversations were completely open ended and moved different directions.
Sample Interviews
Usability Test
This method provides direct insights into how users interact with the app's features. Usability test offers a practical and actionable understanding of the app's effectiveness in meeting user needs.
Benchmark
It’s important to know the apps the book readers use to get to know the patterns they are used to and not break them. Also, we can add some features and improve them in our app.
Define Phase: Analyze and define the problems, pain points, motivations, and brainstorm ideas.
